Happy Men’s Health Awareness Month from Manning Global

This November, we’re not just growing moustaches; we’re growing awareness. Men’s Health Awareness Month, aka Movember, is a time to celebrate positive male role models and tackle the unique health challenges men face head-on. From physical well-being to mental health, men’s health often takes a backseat until things get serious – but it doesn’t have to be that way.

At Manning Global, we believe it’s time for a change. Let’s break the stigma around men’s health, encourage open conversations, and prioritise well-being – not just for the men in our lives, but for everyone. Here’s why Men’s Health Month is crucial…

Men’s Health Matters!

Did you know? Men are often less likely to seek medical help early, or at all. Many wait until their illness becomes “serious enough” before taking action. This Movember, it’s time to encourage men to prioritise their health and well-being – both physically and mentally.

Here’s why Men’s Health Month matters:

1️⃣ Mental Health Crisis: Men are facing a mental health crisis. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50, yet only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are men. This shows that more support and awareness are needed for men to access mental health services.

2️⃣ Health Inequalities Among Men: Not all men experience the same health outcomes. For example, Black men in the UK are at a significantly higher risk of prostate cancer, with 1 in 4 being diagnosed in their lifetime. Addressing these disparities is crucial.

What Our Experts Say About Connection and Self-Care

To inspire us all, here’s what some of our experts have shared about the importance of staying connected and taking care of ourselves:

Lance Loya, Author, Keynote Speaker & Coach, highlights the challenge of remote work: “The challenge with remote work is that it can lead to a lack of connectivity between team members. The distance reduces occasions for in-person interactions that bond teammates and foster empathy. But there are also benefits to remote work that lend themselves to creating good teammates.

Remote workers are entrusted with more freedom and flexibility, which can prevent burnout and lead to higher levels of job satisfaction. With very little effort, leaders can maintain connectivity between remote team members and replicate those important ‘water cooler moments’. Instead of cutting straight to business, it may behove leaders to forgo efficiency and begin Zoom meetings with conversations unrelated to work. There are ways to bond with a remote team.”

Davor Molnar, our Senior Business Manager, reflects on the benefits of remote work: “Going fully remote has changed a lot of things for me: I’m more productive and enjoy waking up, turning on my laptop and starting work! Being in daily contact with my work colleagues really helps with all of the above.”

Ben K. Ellis, Social Intelligence Researcher and Consultant, reminds us of the power of peace:“”Peace as I choose to find it” it serves as a guiding principle in my daily life, especially as I navigate the challenges and joys of being an independent freelancer, while making sure I tend to and prioritise my mental health. It serves as a daily reminder to be intentional in my pursuit of inner calm and to take responsibility for my own well-being. It’s a principle that has guided me through both challenges and triumphs, and one that I believe will continue to shape my personal and professional journey for years to come.

Dan Underwood, Career & Business Coach, emphasises being present: “I would advise them to invest in a period of self-reflection, away from external influences and distractions. Life outside work for me means BEING present! To truly enjoy and be grateful for those who are in – and who come into – my life. Living a fulfilling life away from coaching means managing a healthy detachment from the work I do. To be free, just ‘Dan,’ without critical self-judgments and being so serious.

This Men’s Health Awareness Month, let’s take inspiration from these role models and focus on staying connected, finding peace, being present, and, most importantly, staying active!
