From pain to purpose

“I lived with back pain for ten years, and like many people, I went down the medical route with no answers. When I became a coach, I discovered the power of understanding the brain-pain connection and managed to get rid of my own pain. It was life-changing. Once I experienced that freedom, I knew I had to dedicate my work to helping others do the same. Everyone deserves to know this science exists.”

That personal journey became the foundation of Recovery Lab. Gemma sums up her mission in one line: “Supporting high achievers to break free from chronic pain so they can get back to living the life they love.”

Challenges on the road to Recovery Lab

Like many entrepreneurs, Gemma admits that building her business wasn’t easy.

“Like many entrepreneurs, I fell into the trap of trying to do everything myself. I still run most parts of my business solo, but I’ve learned to drop the urgency and find the fun in it.”

She also had to learn to trust her instincts.

“Another big challenge was ignoring my gut instinct – in the beginning I took on clients who weren’t the right fit. Now, I only work with people I know I can help significantly. That shift has made all the difference.”

Spreading the word about Pain Reprocessing Therapy

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is still relatively new, but Gemma is passionate about making it more widely known:

“I share it everywhere I can – podcasts, radio, workshops, networking. I’m the only PRT coach listed on the official website in my region, which helps with credibility. I’ve even worked with actors and athletes, though often they can’t publicly share their recovery because no one knew they were struggling.”

Her hope? That more high-profile voices will speak out, so millions more can discover this approach.

A powerful blend: science and coaching

What makes Gemma’s approach different is how she integrates multiple disciplines:

  • PRT: The science behind why the brain produces pain signals.
  • Strengths Coaching: Insights into personality traits that may fuel chronic pain (perfectionism, people-pleasing, overachievement).
  • Positive Psychology: Practical tools to build resilience and calm the nervous system.

“Together, it’s a very powerful blend.”

Building trust through credentials

As a PCC-level ICF coach, Gemma knows that professional standards matter.

“With chronic pain recovery, trust and safety are everything. Having a globally recognised credential gives clients confidence that they’re not just ‘chatting with a friend’ – they’re working with someone trained to a professional standard. That trust is essential, because the brain needs to feel safe before it can let go of pain.”

The 4Ps Freedom from Pain system

One of Gemma’s proudest creations is her structured 4Ps method:

  1. Pain Science – Educating clients on how the brain creates pain signals.
  2. Personality – Using Gallup CliftonStrengths to uncover traits that may contribute to pain.
  3. Past – Exploring life events that may have left the brain in “high alert.”
  4. Practical Tools – Teaching real-time strategies to calm pain flare-ups.

“It’s structured, but always tailored to each client.”

What success looks like

Gemma measures progress through both self-assessments and lived experiences:

“The biggest marker is hearing my clients’ excitement when they can do things again they thought were lost forever.”

Many share video testimonials on her website, a testament to the transformations she’s guiding.

Laughter really is the best medicine

Gemma’s Laughter Labs and Pain Paradox workshops bring another dimension to her work.

“The Laughter Labs are wonderful because they bring people with chronic pain or anxiety together in a lighthearted way. They build community, joy, and resilience and yes, even my kids get involved helping with the tech! The corporate Pain Paradox workshops have been equally powerful in spreading awareness – I’ve even had participants walk in with migraines that were gone by the time we finished. That’s how immediate the impact can be.”

Staying ahead of the science

Gemma keeps her work cutting-edge with weekly updates from the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Center. But she admits one frustration:

“The frustrating part is knowing it can take decades for proven science to filter into mainstream medicine, where doctors are still mostly trained to treat symptoms, not root causes.”

Marketing that works

Referrals are her strongest driver:

“When someone gets their health back, they can’t help but tell others.”

Alongside word of mouth, she posts consistently on LinkedIn and Instagram. Her approach? Authenticity over algorithms.

Advice for Other Coaches

Find your niche: “Keep it specific and aligned with your own story. People connect with lived experience.”

Expect skepticism: Acceptance of brain-body science is growing, especially post-pandemic, but not everyone is ready to hear it.

I see three types of people: those seeking a quick medical fix, those who avoid medical routes altogether, and those who’ve tried everything else before realising the brain holds the key. The last two groups are where my work makes the biggest difference.”

Looking ahead

Gemma’s long-term goal is to make Recovery Lab more scalable and accessible.

“I want Recovery Lab to move with me wherever life takes us, so online work will always be at the core. Looking ahead, I plan to run group programs, particularly for women, using Gallup CliftonStrengths as a way to combine self-awareness and pain recovery. That’s the next exciting step.”

Beyond the business: Who is Gemma?

Happiest outdoors: swimming, biking, running, camping – “Anything that gives me fresh air and movement.”

Bucket list destination: Menton in the south of France – “I’ve heard it’s a beautiful place to retire, so I want to see it for myself and imagine that future.”

Dream job as a child: “I didn’t have one – but I did spend hours organising my teddy bears into little meetups. Looking back, it was probably early HR training which is the first career path I followed before discovering coaching.”

Hidden talents: “I can almost unicycle, juggle, stilt-walk, and I’m learning the slackline. Basically, I’m a clown in training! I love picking up quirky new skills because it fascinates me to feel new neurons firing in the brain – the same process that helps people unlearn pain.”

Surprising fact: “I’m a Scout Leader for my kids’ group. I grew up in the Girl Guides, ran my own group at university, and now I’m back at it. It’s the perfect way to give back and switch off from work.”

Personal achievement: “Overcoming ten years of chronic back pain. I honestly don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t.”

Best advice she received: On a family trip to Disney World, my dad told me I could work there one day. And I did, right after graduation. That year spent working in Disney World Florida was transformative – it shaped my outlook and gave me some of my best memories.”

Fictional character she’d talk to: Mary Poppins – “I’d ask her where her unwavering confidence comes from and hope a little of it rubs off on me.”

Playlist of her life: “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” (Lion King), “The Wizard and I” (Wicked), and “The Greatest Showman.”

Most significant visual from childhood: “Gardens – my great-grandma’s, my granny’s, and my parents’. They were full of flowers, birds, and trickling water. To this day, they symbolise calm and joy for me.”

Life motto: Live, Love, Laugh, Learn.

Letter to her younger self: “Dear little Gemma, you’ve got this.

Final word from Gemma: You only have one life. This isn’t a dress rehearsal – so make a difference.”
